Project for the cultivation of herbs

Sri Madhavan Unni was talking to me about the project of a scheme to grow herbal garden to grow medicinal plants and that govt. is giving grants and subsidy for the cultivation of medicinal plants. He was suggesting to me to create a blog for this purpose. We may have to know which medicinal plants they approve, what is their demand, who buys them in the market, what is their price level, is it a round the year crop, Unni does not have any ready answer for any of the questions. He just read in the paper that govt. will give subsidy and he wanted avail of the opportunity and start the farm. I told him that for commercial vialibity, it has to have a demand in the market. What the level of cultivation now and what is the level of demand. Only after a detailed study we may be able to present a blog. When I told him I had a study about this scheme long ago with the agricultural officer of our bank. Cultivation may not be economical unless a fixed quantity is cultivated and offered for sale. It should be economical for the buyer to buy the quantity offered by us. I will have further talk with him to dispel any doubts he may have in his mind.
